Changing Landscapes

I’m interested in how landscapes change when we build canals, railways, roads, and even other structures like castles. Long after they have gone out of use, earthworks will remain, changing the shape of our countryside and towns.

Ever since humans first flattened a piece of land to grow crops or dug out ground for a house, we have made an impact on the landscape.

These changes can remain long after the original use has gone, and the area has returned to fields or been reused for new purposes.

I have created a page on this to discuss the subject in greater detail, covering the area around Forest Farm I covered in the video I mentioned in my last post about the Cardiff Railway, way back in March 2023. I originally planned to release this in 2023. It is now late in 2025… (whoops) Also included is a castle “of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval defensive practices“.

I hope that this will be part 1 of a series on changing landscapes. I want to look further at how the industry and transport links in the Taff Gorge have changed its look over the years. Furthermore, I would also like to follow along the route of the Glamorganshire canal (albeit that a good 50% of it is now under the A470!). However, it might be a while before these appear…
