Just before D-day, in June 1944, a Halifax was shot down attempting to deliver Belgian SOE agents. This page gives the fate of all 11 people involved in the incident:
Sometimes it wasn’t enemy action that could cause an aircraft not to return. On 16 Dec 1943, the RAF sufferred its biggest losses when returning aircraft were unable to see airfields and runways due to a blanket of fog covering England:
